I’m writing a series of novels: the Seeking Scylla series. Some characters dance on the edges of the narratives. Some never make it in. In Beyond Scylla blogs, I share stories and vignettes about these characters.
—What do you mean, “This is not me”?
—I really don’t want to go.
—Then don’t.
—I have to.
—Says who? . . . Carol? Hello? Says who?
—I say.
—Then, it’s on you. Me? I would just call last minute and say “I’m sick.”
—I can’t do that. It’s not me.
—Oh, so you’re better than me?
—I didn’t say that. I’m just not comfortable lying.
—And there it is, oh holier than me.
—Good grief. I didn’t say that, and this isn’t about you anyway. It’s about mom, which is hard enough, and you’re making it worse.
—All I’m saying, it’s an option. It’s not like she never lied to you. Big fat lies, not little white lies.
—Here’s my bus. Wish me luck. Bye.
—It’s not too late to be sick. Just saying.
—Thanks, it’s… just not me.

It takes character to remain true to yourself, especially when dealing with someone who doesn’t have your same values, and when given an out by someone else you care about.
Wow! I think I have a sibling just like this! In fact we’ve had a very similar conversation.
Your writing is so real!!!!
